AL Wild Card Game

Game Date Matchup/Result Breakdown
1 Fri. Oct. 5 Orioles 5 at Rangers 1 Recap | Box
Orioles Win Wild Card Playoff

History

This is the first meeting between the Orioles and the Rangers in the 40-plus years of the American League playoffs, but there is plenty of familiarity between these two clubs.

The Rangers won five of the seven meetings they had with the Orioles this season, including two of three at Arlington back in August.

However, the Rangers saw no bigger performance this season from any one player than the display Josh Hamilton put on at Camden Yards on May 9. In the first game of a doubleheader, Hamilton went off to the tune of a 5-for-5 game that featured four home runs and eight runs batted-in.

The Rangers will also hope to use the element of surprise in the Wild Card match in the form of starter Yu Darvish. The Orioles are the only AL team Darvish did not face during the regular season, but the big-ticket addition went 11-3 in 15 starts against first-time opponents this season.

The Orioles, meanwhile, will be hoping to play on personal history in the one-game playoff. Buck Showalter is now guiding his third different team into post-season play after guiding the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks to the Division Series in 1995 and 1999 respectively. The one team he was not able to guide to the post-season was the Rangers, with whom he won AL Manager of the Year in 2004.

Added motivation for the O's will come from the club's leading home run hitter, Chris Davis. After spending years in the Rangers organization – the last two largely in Hamilton's shadow – Texas parted ways with Davis, sending him to Baltimore on trade deadline day in 2011 along with Tommy Hunter for reliever Koji Uehara. Davis responded with 33 dingers this season and would like nothing better than to show his former team his true worth.
