Lackey goes the distance in Angels victory

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - John Lackey threw a seven-hit shutout as the LA Angels of Anaheim downed the Seattle Mariners, 8-0, in the second of a four- game set at Safeco Field.

Lackey (13-6) walked three and struck out five while throwing 106 pitches (67 strikes) for his first shutout and first complete game of the season.

Gary Matthews Jr. went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two home runs while Orlando Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and four RBI for the Angels, who have won five of six.

Jeff Weaver (2-10) was roughed up for six runs on seven hits with three walks in just four innings of work for the Mariners, who had a four-game winning streak stopped. Jose Vidro went 2-for-4 in the loss.

Seattle loaded the bases with two outs in the first, but Richie Sexson flied out to end the inning.

The Angels took the lead in the second inning. Matthews got the team on the board with a two-run home run and Maicer Izturis followed with a homer over the right field wall. Then with the bases loaded, Cabrera grounded out to score Jeff Mathis for a 4-0 lead.

The Mariners put their first two runners on base in the third, but Jose Guillen lined out and Adrian Beltre grounded into a double play to kill the threat.

Cabrera gave the Angels a 6-0 lead in the fourth when his two-run single plated Reggie Willits and Chone Figgins.

Cabrera's solo home run in the sixth extended the Angels advantage to 7-0.

Matthews added a solo home run in the ninth to account for the final score.

Game Notes

Seattle made a move before the trade deadline as the team shipped pitcher Julio Mateo to Philadelphia in exchange for infielder Jesus Merchan..It was Weaver's fourth straight loss..It was Lackey's ninth complete game and sixth shutout of his career..In his two starts against the Mariners this season, Lackey has thrown 15 shutout innings..The Angels are 8-3 versus Seattle this year..Attendance was 28,903.
