Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Tadahito Iguchi hit 4-for-5, scored once and knocked in a run against his former squad, helping to propel the San Diego Padres past the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2, to even the series at Citizens Bank Park.
The rubber match of the three-game set takes place Thursday. The Phillies captured the opener on Tuesday, 7-4, behind Cole Hamels' quality start.
On Wednesday, however, it was Chris Young (2-2) shining on the rubber for San Diego, earning the victory after tossing six innings and allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six.
After Young's departure, relievers Joe Thatcher, Heath Bell and Trevor Hoffman each worked scoreless innings to hold off the Phils, with Hoffman notching his fifth save of the season.
Adrian Gonzalez clobbered a two-run homer for the Padres, who had dropped seven of their last eight outings and 11 of 13. Kevin Kouzmanoff connected on a solo shot, and Brian Giles batted 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
Chase Utley belted a two-run home run for Philadelphia, which, in spite of the loss concluded its first winning April since the 2003 campaign. Geoff Jenkins finished 3-for-4, and Eric Bruntlett scored a run, as the Phillies were defeated for just the second time in their last six contests and third of the last 10.
Jamie Moyer (1-2) took the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings. The veteran southpaw is winless in his past four trips to the mound, and slipped to 6-7 lifetime against San Diego.
San Diego wasted no time getting on the board. In the first frame, an Iguchi infield single was followed by Gonzalez's monstrous blast deep into the seats in right. Despite two botched throws to first by Bruntlett and a muffed line drive by Jayson Werth, Moyer escaped the inning with no additional damage.
Already trailing 2-0 before their first at-bat, the Phillies quickly erased the deficit. Bruntlett smacked a base hit to left before Utley crushed his 11th homer of the season, clearing the right field fence.
It didn't take long for the Padres to jump back on top, though, as Kouzmanoff led off the third by depositing a Moyer fastball, which was clocked in the low 80s, into the left field stands.
With runners on the corners and one out in the sixth, Chad Durbin was brought in to relieve Moyer, but could not do the job as Iguchi slapped a single up the middle that scored Josh Bard to extend the San Diego advantage to 4-2.
Philly was unable to advance a man past second base throughout the rest of the tilt. The only threat came in the eighth, when Bruntlett drew a one-out walk and Utley launched a fly ball the opposite way, into left field, that fell just shy of the wall and into the glove of Scott Hairston.
