Phoenix, AZ - Brandon Webb threw his first shutout of the season and the Arizona Diamondbacks offense hit four solo home runs en route to a 4-0 win over the Washington Nationals, in the middle contest of a three- game set.
Webb (10-2) allowed just six hits and fanned eight batters, while not issuing a walk for Arizona, which snapped its five-game skid. Webb already had one complete game under his belt this season, but kept Washington scoreless for his eighth career shutout.
"It's nice to get both of those done in one game," said Webb, " I struggled in Atlanta, with everything, pretty much, to be able to come back and do that, the team has been struggling and hopefully this will jump start us."
Mark Reynolds hit two of the Diamondbacks' four homers, while Chris Young and Justin Upton each added one.
Jason Bergmann (1-2) also went the distance, but was dealt the loss as he gave up all four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. Lastings Milledge had two hits for the Nats, who have alternated wins and losses the last four games. Washington had six hits, all of which were singles.
"I felt pretty good," Bergmann said. "I felt real strong all game, everything was working, good control of the slider, except for four pitches. The fastball was good, it was hard, throwing down through the zone. I was very happy with my outing, aside for the home runs."
A Reynolds home run off Bergmann with one out in the second put the D'Backs up 1-0.
Back-to-back homers in the seventh from Upton and Reynolds put Arizona on top 3-0.
In the eighth, Young deposited Bergmann's 3-1 slider over the fence in center to give the D'Backs a four-run lead.
Webb got Dmitri Young to pop out in the ninth for the first out. Milledge grounded out to third base for the second out, but Ryan Langerhans got a single. Willie Harris went down swinging for the final out.
Notes: Webb began this season by winning his first nine starts, but the standout right-hander lost back-to-back outings prior to Saturday's win..Bergmann had not given up a run in any of his last three starts before Saturday, a span totaling 19 2/3 consecutive innings. However, Reynolds' second-inning homer ended the streak..Time of game was 1:52, which sets a D'Backs record for shortest game in franchise history.
