Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Jose Lopez had a pair of doubles to go with his two runs batted in, and the Seattle Mariners snapped an eight-game home losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Florida Marlins.
Adrian Beltre and Raul Ibanez each had three hits, with Ibanez adding an RBI and a run scored for the Mariners, who snapped a four-game skid overall. Ichiro Suzuki also had an RBI for Seattle.
Felix Hernandez (6-5) got the win as he went 7 1/3 innings and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on six hits while striking out nine. Hernandez also struck out the side in the fourth on nine pitches, a feat that has only happened 42 times in major league history. Brandon Morrow earned his second save of the year with a perfect ninth.
"The key to the game was Felix," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez. "He quieted our bats pretty easily. We got a little something going there and were able to get back in it, but he was pretty good."
Dan Uggla had a solo home run for the Marlins, who have lost four of their last six contests. Jeremy Hermida, Jorge Cantu and Matt Treanor each had an RBI in defeat.
Scott Olsen (4-4) took the loss as he was touched for five runs -- four earned -- on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.
The Mariners got on the board in the first inning. Suzuki led off with a single and scored as Lopez followed with a double. Jose Vidro went down swinging, but Beltre made it first and third with a single. Ibanez kept it going with a single that plated Lopez.
Uggla's homer in the second brought the Marlins within 2-1.
The M's tacked on more runs in the fourth. It was first and second after Kenji Johjima walked and Willie Bloomquist singled. Yuniesky Betancourt advanced the runners with a sac bunt and Suzuki brought a run home with a sac fly to right. Lopez then smoked a double to left to plate Bloomquist, and Seattle was up 4-1.
Seattle added an insurance run in the fifth. Beltre led off with a single, but was thrown out at second on Ibanez's force out before Richie Sexson made it first and second with a single. Logan Kensing then came on in relief, but immediately hurt his own cause as he threw an easy double play ball into the outfield, allowing Johjima to reach base and Ibanez to score.
The Marlins made some noise in the sixth. Treanor, Alfredo Amezaga and Hanley Ramirez began the game with consecutive singles to load the bases. Hermida offered an RBI single and Jorge Cantu belted a sac fly to deep left, as Florida pulled within 5-3.
Luis Gonzalez led off the seventh with a double and moved to third as Bloomquist misplayed the ball in center. Two batters later, Treanor hit a sac fly to left to plate Gonzalez and pull the Marlins within 5-4.
Morrow came in for the Mariners in the ninth and got Uggla to go down swinging. Gonzalez grounded to Lopez for the second out and Wes Helms whiffed at the third strike to end the game.
"Felix was pretty good," said Mariners manager John McLaren. "He had a little bump in the road, but he overcame it. It was a good win. We got some timely hitting."
Notes: The Mariners made another noticeable change on Monday, as Suzuki started his first game in right field since August 19, 2006. The Japanese superstar had been operating as the team's regular center fielder, but again played in right on Tuesday..Hernandez entered this matchup having won his last three starts and had not surrendered an earned run in any of those games, a span of 21 straight innings. He didn't allow a run until the second inning of Tuesday's matchup..The only previous series between these two interleague foes took place at Florida's Dolphin Stadium from June 7-9, 2005. The Mariners won two of the three matchups during that set.
