New York, NY (Sports Network) - Washington Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman and Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo have been named the National League Co-Players of the Week for the period of August 25-31.
Guzman led the NL with a .552 (16-of-29) batting average, posting a .828 slugging percentage and collecting three doubles, a homer and six runs batted in. He hit for the cycle on August 28 against the Dodgers, posting three RBI in the game. On the season, the All-Star is batting .308 with 32 doubles, six homers and 42 RBI. It marks the shortstop's first weekly award honor for his career.
Arroyo was tops in the NL with 16 innings pitched en route to a 2-0 record, including a complete game against the Houston Astros on August 26. The 31- year-old posted a 1.69 earned run average while allowing just three runs with eight strikeouts. The righty has compiled a 13-10 record with a 4.97 ERA this season for the Reds, and it marks his first career weekly award honor.
Other nominees for this week's award included Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (.440, HR, 4 RBI); Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth (.500, 4 HR, 9 RBI) and pitcher Brett Myers (2-0, 1.29 ERA); Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado (.750 SLG, 4 HR, 9 RBI); and Astros infielder Ty Wigginton (.348 AVG, 5 HR, 9 RBI).
