Miami, FL (Sports Network) - New York Mets reliever J.J. Putz will miss the rest of the season after an MRI exam revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.
The news comes on the same day the team announced ace Johan Santana will have surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow and will also miss the remainder of the season.
Putz has been out since June, when he had arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur and bone fragments from the back of his right elbow. But a recent MRI exam revealed fraying and a slight tear to the UCL.
In 29 appearances this season, Putz went 1-4 with a 5.22 earned run average and two saves.
