San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants designated right-handed reliever Merkin Valdez for assignment on Thursday. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the move was made to make room on the 40-man roster for slugger Aubrey Huff, who was signed on Wednesday.

Valdez appeared in 48 games for the Giants last season, going 2-1 with a 5.66 earned run average.

Over parts of three big league seasons - all with the Giants - the 28-year-old Valdez is 3-1 with a 5.24 ERA in 65 games.
