TORONTO -- Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell will not be on the bench for the team's home game Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Farrell left Thursday's 9-6 loss to the Kansas City Royals in the bottom of the ninth inning with what the club described as muscular pain on his left side, below the rib cage.

Farrell was not available for his usual post-game media conference at Rogers Centre and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

"He's feeling a lot better, he's at home, he just needs to rest a little bit," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said before Friday's game. "He is day-to-day at this point. He should be fine. He might be back (Saturday)."

Anthopoulos said Farrell wanted to be there for the opener against the Rays, but doctors told him to take the night off.

"John is like a player in that respect," Anthopoulos added. "But your health always comes first."

Blue Jays bench coach Don Wakamatsu will be in charge on Friday, but said won't stray from Farrell's style.

"I talked to John today and he seemed in good spirits, a little weak," Wakamatsu said. "I'll try to be an extension of John. The club's playing well and they're used to that style."
