Toronto Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Dustin McGowan had a setback in the opening days of spring training.

Manager John Gibbons told the media on Wednesday that McGowan's shoulder was sore after playing catch on Tuesday and he will be slowed down at camp.

The 30-year-old signed a two-year contract extension last March that will see him earn $1.5 million for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

The deal also included an option for the 2015 season worth $4 million.

McGowan appeared in five games for Blue Jays in 2011, making four starts and posting an 0-2 record with a 6.43 ERA.

His appearance on September 6 last season marked his first outing with Toronto since July 8, 2008 as he underwent shoulder surgeries in 2008 and 2010.

In 2008 he made a career-high 27 starts, posting a 12-10 record with a 4.08 ERA with two complete games and one shutout.

McGowan, who was selected 33rd overall in the first round of the 2000 Draft, is the longest continuously-tenured player in the organization.
