Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie will take the next step in his recovery from a strained rib cage muscle when he plays in an extended spring training game on Thursday.

Lawrie, 23, was injured in a March 6 exhibition game while playing for Team Canada in advance of the World Baseball Classic.

The Blue Jays don't have a formal timeline for Lawrie's return to the big league lineup but general manager Alex Anthopoulos suggested that the best-case scenario would be a season debut against the New York Yankees on April 19 or in Baltimore on April 22.
