The Toronto Blue Jays signed C Ramon Hernandez on Sunday and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo.

Hernandez began the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and hit .208 (10-48) with three home runs and six RBI in 17 games. The 37-year-old was designated for assignment by L.A. on June 14 and released last week.

Hernandez has played 15 years in the Major Leagues with Oakland, San Diego, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Colorado and Los Angeles. In 1,526 career games, he has hit .263 with 262 doubles, 169 home runs and 757 RBI.

A 2003 American League All-Star while with the Athletics, he is second among all active catchers with 1,447 games played defensively as catcher (Texas' A.J. Pierzynski, 1,614).

He has ranked in the Top 4 in the American League in assists for a catcher six times, including leading the circuit in 2001 and 2003.
