Tigers' Cabrera captures MLBPA top player award

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was named the 2013 Player of the Year as voted by the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Cabrera also captured the honor last year and was again selected as the American League's Outstanding Player. He won the American League Triple Crown last year and this season again led the league in batting at .348 while hitting 44 homers with 137 runs batted in. Only Baltimore's Chris Davis had more homers and RBI.

The National League's Outstanding Player was Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen for the second straight season. He helped the Pirates to the playoffs for the first time since 1992 after batting .317 with 21 homers and 84 RBI.

The top pitchers were Detroit's Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers. Scherzer was the lone pitcher to reach 20 wins this season, finishing 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts, while Kershaw led the majors with a 1.83 ERA and was 16-9 with 232 strikeouts.

Tampa Bay outfielder Wil Myers was named the top rookie in the American League and Miami pitcher Jose Fernandez picked up the National League honor. Myers hit .293 with 13 homers and 53 RBI, while Fernandez was 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA.
