David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox left Thursday's 8-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ninth inning with back spasms after check swinging on a pitch by Rob Rasmussen.

Ortiz was escorted off the field while clutching his back. He was replaced by pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes.

The 38-year-old designated hitter hit four home runs in four games against the Blue Jays in the series including his record breaking 37th career home run at the Rogers Centre. He passed Alex Rodriguez for the most home runs by a visiting batter at the stadium.

The native of the Dominican Republic leads the Red Sox with 24 home runs and 72 runs batted in 99 games this season.

Boston is in last place in the American League East, nine games back of the East-leading Baltimore Orioles.
