New York, NY (Sports Network) - Tampa Bay right-hander Rafael Soriano was named the replacement for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera for the American League All-Stars.
Soriano was selected as the next highest ranking reliever not already on the ballot and will compete in his first All-Star Game.
The 30-year-old Dominican has pitched to a 1.65 earned run average and 2-0 mark in 33 appearances this season, going 23-for-24 in save opportunities. Over 32 2/3 innings, he has struck out 29, walked seven and held opponents to a .172 average.
Rivera was selected to his 11th All-Star Game on Sunday, but will not play in the event because of injuries to his left side and right knee.
The 81st edition of the mid-summer classic is slated for next Tuesday at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
