DURHAM, N.C. -- Mike Trout is the first rookie to win Baseball America's player of the year award.

Called up three weeks into the season, the Los Angeles Angels outfielder batted .326 with 30 homers and 83 RBIs. He also led the majors with 49 stolen bases (in 54 attempts) and 129 runs while making several highlight-reel catches.

Trout, who turned 21 in August, was the first major league player to hit at least .320 with 30 home runs and 45 stolen bases in a season.

Trout also was honoured with the publication's rookie of the year award. Last season, he was Baseball America's minor league player of the year.
