The San Francisco Giants won the World Series opener 8-3 to take a 1-0 series lead.
1st: Barry Zito opened the game by getting leadoff hitter Austin Jackson to fly out before Omar Infante singled up the middle. Zito then walked Miguel Cabrera to put two men on, but Prince Fielder flied out and Delmon Young grounded out to end the top of the first.
Justin Verlander opened strong, forcing Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro to ground out, but then gave up a solo home run to Pablo Sandoval, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. Buster Posey struck out to end the inning.
2nd: Following a Jhonny Peralta strikeout, Avisail Garcia and Alex Avila grounded out for a 1-2-3 inning.
Verlander opened with a strikeout of Hunter Pence, then got Brandon Belt to fly out and Gregor Blanco to ground out to end the inning.
3rd: Following an infield pop out by Verlander, Jackson singled to centre field. Infante struck out for the second out and Giants' LF Blanco made a nice diving catch in left field on a Cabrera hit for the third out.
The Giants scored three runs in the third. After Crawford and Zito were retired, Pagan doubled off the third base and was hit home by Scutaro. Sandoval then hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to increase the Giants' lead to 3-0. Posey continued the inning with a single before Pence grounded out to end the inning.
4th: Following a Fielder single, Young grounded to Posey who tagged him and threw out Fielder for the double play. Peralta then flied out to end the inning.
Zito helped his own cause, knocking in Belt with a two-out single. Belt opened the inning with a walk before Blanco struck out and Crawford grounded out. Belt scored on Zito's single to increase the San Francisco's lead to 5-0. Verlander got out of the inning with a Pagan ground out.
5th: It was a 1-2-3 inning for Zito, getting Garcia and Avila to ground out before striking out pinch hitter Danny Worth.
Al Alburquerque replaced Verlander for the bottom of the fifth, but faired no better against Sandoval. After forcing Scutaro to ground out, Sandoval hit his third home run in as many at bats, increasing San Francisco's lead to 6-0. Posey grounded out and Pence struck out to end the inning.
6th: Following a leadoff double, Jackson advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly by Infante. Cabrera hit Jackson in with a single to centre for the Tigers' first run of the game. After another nice diving catch by Blanco on a Fielder fly ball, Young knocked the Tigers third hit of the inning to centre field. Tim Lincecum came on for Zito and struck out Peralta to end the half inning.
Belt's flyout to left, Blanco's strikeout, and Crawford's grounder to second made quick work for Detroit in the Giants' half of the inning.
7th: Lincecum opened the inning strking out Garcia and Avila. Quintin Berry, pinch-hitting for Alburquerque, grounded out to end the Tigers' half of the seventh.
Jose Valverde, the Tigers' third pitcher of the night, opened the bottom of the seventh striking out Lincecum, before giving up a double to Pagan and a run-scoring single to Scutaro. Sandoval didn't hit another homer, but did single to improve to 4-4 on the night and advance Scutaro to third base. Posey's second hit of the game - a single - knocked Scutaro in and chased Valverde from the game. Joaquin Benoit entered the game and after a wild pitch advanced the runners, struck out Pence and Belt to end the inning.
8th: A Jackson strikeout, Infante ground out, and Cabrera strike out made it a quick half inning for Lincecum.
Rick Porcello came on to pitch for the Tigers and the Giants went down in order. Blanco was called out on strikes, before Crawford flies out and pinch-hitter Huff grounded out.
9th: Jose Mijares came on to pitch for the Giants, got Fielder to ground out for the first out of the inning, before being replaced by George Kontos. Young singled off Kontos and Peralta belted a two-run homer, cutting the Giants' lead to five. Pinch-hitter Andy Dirks grounded out to first and after an Avila walk, Kontos was replaced by Jeremy Affeldt. Pinch-hitter Ramon Santiago grounded out to short to end the game.
