World Series Game 2: Inning-by-inning recap

The San Francisco Giants won Game 2, 2-0, to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series. The series shifts to Detroit on Saturday.


1st: Madison Bumgarner opened the game striking out Austin Jackson and Omar Infante before Miguel Cabrera grounded out to end the inning.

Fister also started the game with a strikeout, getting Angel Pagan swinging before Marcu Scutaro grounded out to short. Pablo Sandoval's streak came to an end, popping out to left to end the first.

2nd: Followng a hit-by-pitch that advanced him to first, Prince Fielder was thrown out at a play at the plate on a Delmon Young double. Jhonny Peralta then popped out to first and Avasail Garcia struck out to end the Tigers' half of the second.

Buster Posey opened with a single before Hunter Pence flied out to centre field and Brandon Belt struck out. Gregor Blanco then hit a ball up the middle that struck Fister in the head and bounced into the outfield for a single. Fister stayed in the game and walked the next batter, Brandon Crawford, to load the bases. Bumgarner popped out to short to end the second, leaving three runners stranded.

3rd: Gerald Laird popped out to left field to open the third, before Fister and Jackson struck out to end the Tigers' half of the third.

Pagan, Scutaro, and Sandoval all grounded out for a quick third inning for Fister and the Tigers.

4th: Infante opened the fourth with an infield single, then Sandoval made a great catch on a Cabrera line drive to third. Fielder's long fly ball to left field was caught for the second out of the inning and Infante was caught stealing for the third out.

Following Posey and Pence fly outs, Belt lined out to second base to end the inning.

5th: Bumgarner struck out Young to start the inning before Peralta popped out to right and Garcia grounded out to second to end the top half of the fifth.

Blanco was thrown out after a bunt to open the bottom of the fifth. Crawford's groundout and Bumgarner's strikout ended the inning.

6th: Bumgarner opened the sixth striking out Laird before Fister grounded out. Jackson reached on a walk before Bumgarner struck out Infante to end the half inning.

Following a Pagan fly out to centre and Scutaro foul pop out, Sandoval singled to right field. The inning ended on a Posey fly out to left field.

7th: Cabrera walked to open the inning before Fielder grounded into a double play. Young grounded out to end the Tigers' half of the seventh.

Don Kelly replaced Young defensively for the Tigers. Pence opened the bottom of the seventh with a single, chasing Fister from the game. Drew Smyly came on and walked Belt before Blanco's bunt stayed fair for a base hit, loading the bases. Crawford grounded into a double play but it was enough to score Pence from third, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. Ryan Theriot, pinch-hitting for Bumgarner, struck out to end the inning.

8th: Santiago Casilla got Peralta to pop up in foul territory to start the inning. Andy Dirks, pinch-hitting for Garcia, grounded out to second and Laird grounded out to short for the third out.

Following a four-pitch walk of Pagan, Smyly struck out Scutaro. Pagan stole second so the Tigers gave Sandoval an intentional pass. Octavio Dotel came on, walking Posey to load the bases before a Pence sacrifice fly scored Pagan, doubling San Francisco's lead. Phil Coke came on and struck out Belt to end the eighth.

9th: Sergio Romo forced Quintin Berry to fly out to left, Jackson to strike out, and Infante to fly out in foul territory to end the game.
