SAN DIEGO -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi is giving shortstop Derek Jeter two games off to rest his sore right leg.

Girardi says Jeter has been battling a calf injury. The manager doesn't know if the injury came about because of a strained right quadriceps that landed Jeter on the disabled list from July 12 until being activated last Sunday.

Says Girardi: "It's a concern of ours and we've got to try to get him healthy."

It appeared that Jeter took an awkward step while making a play in Friday night's 7-2 loss. He also had an awkward slide into third base.

Jeter broke his left ankle in the AL championship series in October and opened the season on the DL.

Eduardo Nunez started at shortstop on Saturday night against the San Diego Padres a night after starting at third base. Brett Lillibridge started at third base.
