UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar fight-by-fight breakdown

Anderson Silva took less than one round to finish off Stephan Bonnar with a first round Technical Knockout in the main event at UFC 153 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

PRELIMINARY CARD

Reza Madadi vs. Cristiano Marcello

Round 1 - Marcello throws a big right hand to start the fight, but doesn't do much damage. Marcello connects on a knee, but Madadi is pressing forward. Madadi is following Marcello around the Octagon as the two fighters exchange strikes. The pace to this first round is quick in the first couple minutes. Marcello goes high with a kick that lands to the head. Madadi continues to come forward, but has a small cut over his left eye. Madadi powers Marcello into the fence as the two lock up. Marcello  pushes Madadi away and the fight continues in the stand up. Madadi lands a big punch and stuns Marcello. Madadi goes on the offensive and Marcello is bleeding from his nose. Madadi scores a takedown in the final minute, then stands over Marcello. Marcello  stands with 10 seconds left and throws two wild kicks, with neither connecting. TSN.ca Scorecard: Madadi 10-9.

Round 2 - Madadi rushes out to meet Marcello as the round begins. Marcello lands a kick to the body, but Madadi is finding his range with his punches. Madadi delivers an uppercut and follows it up with a pair of punches. Marcello responds with a solid body kick and then a strong right hand. Marcello hits Madadi with a body shot, and then goes up top with punches. Madadi is bleeding a lot from above his left eye. Madadi with a stiff jab and then an uppercut. Marcello goes high with another kick. Madadi snaps Marcello's head back with a right hand. Madadi goes into the cage and presses on Marcello, who tries to fight his way out. Madadi continues chase as Marcello appears to be wobbly. Marcello locks up with Madadi and pulls guard, dropping to the ground. With less than a minute left, the referee stands up the two fighters, despite the fact they seemed to be working on the ground. Marcello attacks in the final 30 seconds, landing several strikes as the horn sounds. TSN.ca Scorecard: Marcello 10-9.

Round 3 - This is anyone's fight heading into the final round. Madadi connects with a big right hand to start the round. Madadi gets the takedown and as soon as he felt danger from Marcello on the ground, Madadi stood back up. Both fighters are bleeding from their faces. Madadi has a second cut on his nose. Marcello connects with a big kick and Madadi reacts showing off for the crowd. Marcello tries for a takedown, but is stuffed. Marcello lands a knee as Madadi backs away. Marcello now coming on strong and attacking. Madadi is still moving well, but Marcello is still pushing the pace. Madadi isn't as active in the striking this round and Marcello gets the edge in this round and takes the fight in a close one on our card. TSN.ca Scorecard: Marcello 10-9.  

Marcello wins by Split Decision at 5:00 in the third round.

Chris Camozzi vs. Luiz Cane

Round 1 - Camozzi is moving well and getting in and out early with a flurry of shots. Camozzi lands a high kick and then a stiff punch. Cane looks tentative as the fight starts and Camozzi is very comfortable with his striking. Cane gets behind Camozzi and takes him down, still on his back. Cane is working at a submission not even halfway through the first round. Camozzi is defending well as he prevents Cane from securing the choke. Camozzi gets up to his knees and as he goes to stand Cane lands a knee. Camozzi with a combination and generally seems to be faster than Cane with his hands. Camozzi connects with a jab and follows it up with a knee to the body. Camozzi lands a big punch at the end of the round and rocks Cane. TSN.ca Scorecard: Camozzi 10-9.

Round 2 - Camozzi  is chasing Cane around the Ocatagon to start the second round. Camozzi still seems to be more comfortable with his striking, although neither fighter is landing anything significant early in the round. Cane throws a low leg kick. Camozzi drops a solid left hand on Cane, who is still struggling to find his range. Camozzi has been able to stay active and beat Cane to the spot in striking. Cane is circling the outside of the Octagon and Camozzi lands a strong left hand and then hunts Cane down and connects with a knee to the body. TSN.ca Scorecard: Camozzi 10-9.

Round 3 - Camozzi has a slight edge going into the third round. Camozzi is leading with the jab in the opening minute of this round. Camozzi is doing a good job of putting together combinations and has been far more accurate in this bout. Cane delivers an inside leg kick. Cane is trying to mount some offence this round, but Camozzi is still connecting with more strikes. Cane attempts a takedown, but is easily stuffed by Camozzi. Cane lands a big straight left, but may be running out of time. Cane tries for another takedown, but fails. Camozzi lands a left hand as this one comes to a close. Cane did well in the final round, however Camozzi gets this one on our card. TSN.ca Scorecard: Cane 10-9.

Camozzi wins Unanimous Decision at 5:00 in the third round.

Renee Forte vs. Sergio Moraes

Round 1 - Slow start to this one as both fighters feel each other out. Moraes lands the first strike of the bout and gets a reaction from the crowd. Moraes shoots and gets a takedown, but Forte is able to get back to his feet quickly. Moraes keeps the pressure on Forte, holding him against the cage. Forte is trying to fight back with short knees and eventually gets away. Moraes shoots and trips up Forte to score another takedown. Forte jumps up, but Moraes gets another quick takedown and gets Forte's back. Moraes was too high up and Forte escapes. Forte stands over Moraes who is on the ground. Forte circles and delivers a couple kicks before the referee stands the fight back up. Forte lands a few strikes, missing on two front kicks. The horn sounds and Moraes wins the round with his takedowns. TSN.ca Scorecard: Moraes 10-9.

Round 2 - Moraes goes for an early takedown, but Forte slips away. Moraes shoots and gets Forte up against ther cage, before taking him down. Forte once again defends well and gets back to his feet. A minute goes by with little action and the crowd responds with boos. Forte avoids a takedown and lands a knee to the body. Moraes locks Forte up against the fence, but after a while the referee resets them in the centre of the Octagon. Forte lands a big uppercut and then a punch over the top and Moraes is stunned. Forte is unable to capitalize in the final 20 seconds and the round ends. Forte wins the round with better striking and a strong finish. TSN.ca Scorecard: Forte 10-9.

Round 3 - Moraes was lucky to escape the end of the second round and now enters a winner take all round. Moraes throws a big swinging punch over the top that misses. Forte continues to give Moraes respect in the standup game, but Forte seems to be the better striker by far. Forte lands a leg kick and then goes in with a flurry. Moraes attempts for a takedown, but Forte turns away. However, Moraes  takes his back. Moraes is on his back with Forte standing next to the cage. Moraes is on Forte's back and keeps trying submissions. Moraes finally gets his arm under Forte's chin and earns the victory.

Moraes wins by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:10 in the third round.

Diego Brandao vs. Joey Gambino

Round 1 - Gambino goes for the takedown and misses and Brandao attacks right away. Brandao lands several shots and Gambino somehow survives it and returns to the standup. Neither fighter is afraid to use his kicks and both of them are landing kicks early. Brandao lands a big sidekick to the body and pushes Gambino against the fence. Gambino responds with a straight right hand. Gambino connects with a right hand and right leg kick. Gambino gets Brandao against the cage, but Brandao hooks his leg and slams him down. Brandao  is on top and in side control. Gambino catches his leg and pulls him into half guard. Brandao keeps working, but Gambino kicks him off. Brandao delivers a kick to the head as they break apart. Gambino lands another shot that opens a cut over Brandao's right eye. Very active round and it'll be interesting to see how the judges call it, but we have Brandao earning the edge. TSN.ca Scorecard: Brandao 10-9.

Round 2 - Gambino lands a nice combination to start the second round. Brandao stalks Gambino and then connects with a huge right hand over the top that rocks Gambino and drops him to the ground. Brandao attacks, but is unable to end the fight. Brandao is in half guard and working away on his downed opponent. Gambino stays alive and moves to full guard. Brandao is landing strikes in the ground and pound. Gambino secures an armbar and threatens to submit Brandao, but Brandao gets away. Brandao lands a left hook to the body, but Gambino is answering every strike. Brandao locks his hands behind Gambino and picks him up, slamming him down to the canvass. Brandao is back in Gambino's guard. The referee stops them and stands them back up, despite the fact they seemed to be working still. Both fighters swing at the final bell, but neither connects. Brandao is still in charge after this round. TSN.ca Scorecard: Brandao 10-9.

Round 3 - Gambino is looking to land a big shot, but misses on swings early. Gambino lands a jab and still seems to have a lot in the tank here. Brandao catches a kick and then drops Gambino with another big right hand. Gambino is bleeding from his nose. Gambino shoots and grabs a leg, but Brandao defends the takedown. Brandao then gets his third takedown of the fight and is back on top, delivering strikes on the ground. Brandao is attacking the body, but Gambino has him in full guard again. Brandao is utilizing the short elbow, but Gambino is still working from the bottom. The referee decides to stand them up again in what seems like another premature call. Gambino snaps Brandao's head back with a jab. Brandao lands another right hand and is very relaxed as the fight comes to a close. Brandao takes the victory here. TSN.ca Scorecard: Brandao 10-9.

Brandao wins by Unanimous Decision at 5:00 in the third round.

Gleison Tibau vs. Francisco Trinaldo

Round 1 - Takes almost a minute for the first strikes to be thrown and immediately after the exchange, Tibau gets a takedown. Tibau gets a guillotine and pulls Trinaldo into full guard. Trinaldo gets out and they jump back up to their feet. Tibau has Trinaldo against the fence, as Trinaldo delivers body shots. Tibau is fighting tough in the tight quarters. Tibau catches a kick and lands a couple punches. Tibau gets another takedown, but they get back up quickly. Tibau pins Trinaldo against the cage again and the two fighters trade knees. Trinaldo gets Tibau in the clinch and lands a few knees. Tibau gets yet another takedown and ends up in full guard with 30 seconds left in the round. Tibau's veteran experience helped him earn the first round on our card. TSN.ca Scorecard: Tibau 10-9.

Round 2 - Both fighters are being patient as the second round begins. Trinaldo fires with a big right hand, but misses. The two lock up and as they break Trinaldo delivers a left hand. Trinaldo connects on a big shot and Tibau falls. Trinaldo immediately attacks and gets his back on the ground. Tibau stays alive, but Trinaldo is on his back and trying for the submission. Trinaldo moves into mount and goes for an arm triangle, that Tibau gets out of. Trinaldo is dropping several punches down on Tibau. Trinaldo is dominating now in the ground and pound. Tibau has been unable to get up and Trinaldo is taking advantage. Trinaldo wins the round and sets up an exciting finish. TSN.ca Scorecard: Trinaldo 10-9.

Round 3 - Trinaldo and Tibau comes out throwing big punches and throwing heavy punches. Tibau connects with a left hand and Trinaldo responds with a body shot. Tibau drops down and secures a takedown. Tibau is on top and controlling the action here in the third. Tibau is going with hammer fists on his downed opponent. Tibau moves into half guard. The referee moves in and stands them up, very quick decision to stand things up again. Tibau scores another takedown and is back on top. Tibau moves into full mount and locks in an arm triangle. With one minute left, Trinaldo is still trapped in the arm triangle. Trinaldo escapes, but is still on the bottom. Time is running out and the veteran Tibau intelligently wins this final round. Tibau wins by Unanimous Decision at 5:00 in the third round.

Rony (Jason) Mariano Bezerra vs. Sam Sicilia

Round 1 - Jason goes for a big head kick, but misses and is fortunate the Sicilia didn't capitalize. Jason rocks Sicilia with a left hook and Sicilia looks dazed, but survives. Jason clips Sicilia again, but Sicilia moves forward and gets a takedown. Sicilia ends up in Jason's guard. Jason is defending well from the bottom. Sicilia stands and then drops back down on top of Jason with a punch. Jason goes for a pair of submissions, but neither sticks. The referee stands both fighters up. Jason lands a jumping knee to Sicilia's chest. Sicilia throws a haymaker and misses, while Jason counters with a land hand. Jason is landing several punches as both fighters exchange punches. Jason is getting the best of most of the exchanges and takes the first round. TSN.ca Scorecard: Jason 10-9.

Round 2 - Sicilia pushes forward and lands a stiff punch to the Jason's face. Much slower pace in the second round, as Sicilia lands a right hand. Sicilia is looking better with his striking this round. Jason connects to the body with a strong left hand. Jason caughts Sicilia with a knee and attacks,. Sicilia defends with a right hand that makes Jason stumble back. Sicilia is pushing ahead swinging for the fences. Jason connects on two left hands back to back. Jason catches a kick and takes Sicilia to the ground and begins to deliver a series of hammer fists. Sicilia is stuggling to fight back and Jason continues to strike until the referee calls the fight.

Jason wins by Technical Knockout (Punches) at 4:16 in the second round.

MAIN CARD

Demian Maia vs. Rick Story

Round 1 - Story comes out throwing big punches. Story lands a left hook and Maia ducks under and gets a takedown all in the first 30 seconds of the fight. Story gets back to his feet, but Maia puts him back on the canvass. Story is having trouble dealing with Maia, who is excellent on the ground. Maia gets both hooks in and is working Story over near the cage. Story is fighting off Maia's submission attempts, but Maia finally gets the choke hold in tight and Story is forced to tap.

Maia wins by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 2:30 in the first round.

Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado

Round 1 - Prado seems overly fired up for this bout in his home country. Tough not to mention how his trainer slapped him repetitively in the face before he entered the Octagon. Prado throws a high kick that Davis checks. Davis attempts a takedown, but Prado stops him. Prado goes with another high kick that Davis checks. Davis scores a takedown ands has Prado against the cage on the ground. Davis is working hard to keep Prado down and swings around to take his back. Prado is grabbing the fence and the referee keeps warning him. Prado escapes finally, but Davis scores another takedown. Davis drops a big right hand down on Prado. Prado gets up to a knee and Davis begins delivering punches directly to his face. Prado gets up and Davis puts him back down as the round ends. TSN.ca Scorecard: Davis 10-9.

Round 2 - Prado doesn't have the same energy entering this round. Davis tries for another takedown, but eats a kick for his troubles. Davis throws a flying knee that misses, then drops low for a takedown. Davis works hard and gets Prado down again. Davis is punching away on Prado's body. Davis' pressure must be wearing Prado down. Davis shoots, gets his arms around Prado and picks him up off the ground for a big slam. Davis is in side control and delivering body shots to Prado. Davis hooks the arm triangle with just under a minute left and it looks bad for Prado. Prado escapes, but Davis secures an anaconda choke and Prado is forced to tap.

Davis wins by Submission (Anaconda Choke) at 4:29 in the second round.

Jon Fitch vs. Erick Silva

Round 1 - Fitch comes out with an inside leg kick. Silva lands a kick, but Fitch pushes forward and scores a takedown. Fitch is fighting to get Silva's back against the cage. Fitch is hanging on Silva's back and is landing right hands to the face. Fitch is dragging Silva around the outside of the cage as they young fighter tries to escape. Silva finally gets away and they are back to the stand up. Silva with a front kick that lands, followed by a powerful right hand over the top. Silva is locking up with Fitch and landing strikes in close. Fitch pulls him in and gets him to the ground for another takedown. Fitch is looking strong in this round, roughing up the younger fighter the entire first five minutes. TSN.ca Scorecard: Fitch 10-9.

Round 2 - Silva throws a spinning backfist and Fitch responds with a big uppercut that snaps Silva's head back. Silva is on the attack in the second round. Fitch is fighting to get back to his feet as Silva takes his back partially. Fitch gets away, but Silva continues to land punishment on his downed opponent. Fitch gets back up and powers Silva against the cage. Silva is landing elbows to Fitch's head, but Fitch is leaning on Silva still. Silva scores a takedown and gets Fitch's back. Silva has Fitch's neck and the choke is in deep. Fitch is trying to avoid the submission, but Silva has it locked in tight. Fitch someone manages to break the choke hold. Fitch will not give up and spins around into his guard. Fitch begins pounding Silva and then locks in an armbar. Fitch doesn't have the hold tight enough and Silva gets out as the round ends. TSN.ca Scorecard: Silva 10-9.

Round 3 - Fitch moves in and gets his hands around Silva and takes him down. Fitch is delivering heavy punches to Silva as he has him from behind. Silva looks wiped out and is taking serious punches from Fitch. Silva slips away and hooks a guillotine choke and drops down. Fitch gets away and this battle continues. Fitch sneaks around and gets Silva's back again. Silva gets back to his feet, but Fitch is controlling him. Fitch powers Silva back down to the ground. Fitch flattens out Silva and is beating him down on the canvass. Fitch moves into full mount and is pounding down on Silva with a minute left. Fitch has been delivering punch after punch for the last minute or more. Silva finally escapes, but the horn sounds. Huge win for the veteran Fitch. TSN.ca Scorecard: Fitch 10-9.

Fitch wins by Unanimous Decision at 5:00 in the third round

Glover Teixeira vs. Fabio Maldonado

Round 1 - Teixeira clips Maldonado right away and is on the offensive. Teixeira gets Maldonado down and jumps into full mount as he drops several strikes down on Maldonado. Teixeira is in a viscious ground and pound and Maldonado is struggling to defend. Teixeira is completely dominant so far and Maldonado's face is taking all the punishment. Teixeira  locks in an arm triangle as bloods drips down his face. Maldonado survives and gets out of the submission hold, but Teixeira  is still delivering powerful blows down on him. Teixeira takes a second to itch his nose and then continues to pound Maldonado. Maldonado's face is a mess and he is swinging wildly, buit Teixeira is teeing off on his head. Maldonado catches Teixeira with a left hook and both fighters are weak in their legs. Maldonado attempts a guillotine as the horn sounds. TSN.ca Scorecard: Teixeira 10-9.

Round 2 - Teixeira takes Maldonado down right away and is controlling him on the ground. Maldonado is bleeding all over his face as the two get back to the stand up. Maldonado with a stiff jab. Teixeira takes Maldonado down again and is in full mount. How much more of this can Maldonado take? Teixeira is destroying Maldonado with elbows and punches. Teixeira continues to dismantle Maldonado and it's almost difficult to watch. Maldonado is surviving as bloods pours off his face. The referee stands the two fighters up and calls time for the doctor to check Maldonado's face out. The doctor gives the go ahead and the fight resumes. Teixeira lands with the left hook twice in a row. Maldonado is stumbling around but still fighting. TSN.ca Scorecard: Teixeira 10-9. (After the round, the doctor checked out Maldonado again and chose to stop the fight.)

Teixeira wins by Technical Knockout (Doctor's Stoppage) at 5:00 in the second round.

Dave Herman vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Round 1 - Herman starts things with two kicks. Nogueira locks up Herman, but Herman flips Nogueira and slams him down. Herman gets away and lets Nogueira  get back up. Herman clinches and delivers a few knees, then a kick to the body. Nogueira pins him against the cage and grinds on him in the standing clinch. Nogueira catches Herman with a left hand and keeps moving forward. The crowd is cheering on their hero, Nogueira. The veteran works Herman against the cage some more, but no significant damage is done. Nogueira connects on a right hand that jars Herman's head back. Herman is smiling and almost taunting Nogueira. Big Nog checks a high kick from Herman. Tough round to call, but we're giving it to Nogueira. TSN.ca. Scorecard: Nogueira 10-9.

Round 2 - Nogueira comes across with a left hand and drops Herman to the ground. Nogueira gets on top and moves into side control. Nogueira is going for the submission that Herman said he wasn't worried about before the fight. Nogueira moves into full mount and lands a few shots. Herman tries to slip out underneath, but Nogueira gets his arm and tries for the submission again with three minutes left in the round. Herman defends and the scrambles back to his feet. Herman scores a big takedown and ends up in Nogueira's guard. Herman lets him stand back up. Herman lunges forward with a knee, but eats a punch. Nogueira takes him down and moves into full mount. Nogueira again goes for the armbar. Herman tries to escape, but can't and Nogueira gets the submission win he wanted so badly.

Nogueira wins by Submission (Armbar) at 4:31 in the second round.

Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar

Round 1 - Bonnar comes out fast and hunts down Silva. Silva slips and Bonnar grabs him and pins him against the cage. Bonnar is throwing short left hands, and Silva counters with a knee. Silva is defending the takedown at the fence. Bonnar continues with short punches against the fence. Silva turns things around and gets Bonnar against the cage, but Bonnar moves back against the fence. Bonnar backs away and Silva stands at the cage daring Bonnar to attack him. Bonnar tries for a spinning kick and misses. Bonnar lands a punch, but Silva seems unphased by it. Silva continues to stand in front of Bonnar and counter punch against him. Silva takes Bonnar down and as Bonnar goes to get up, Silva lands a huge knee and Bonnar crumbles to the ground. Bonnar grabs his face and Silva moves in for the kill. With a few power punches, the referee is forced to jump in and call the fight.

Silva wins by Technical Knockout (Punches) at 4:40 in the first round.
