Just over a month removed from his advisory role with the Montreal Canadiens, Bob Gainey is back with his other former NHL team.

The former Canadiens general manager is returning to the Dallas Stars as a senior advisor to GM Joe Nieuwendyk.

Gainey worked seven years as GM of the Canadiens before stepping down and assuming an advisory role under general manager Pierre Gauthier in 2010. Both were let go by the Canadiens on Mar. 29 after the club failed to make the postseason.

"I have great faith in the vision Tom Gaglardi, Joe Nieuwendyk and Jim Lites have in rebuilding this franchise," said Gainey in a statement. "I'm looking forward to rejoining the organization, and lending my advice and guidance as we strive to get the Stars back on top."

Gainey returns to the team he led to a Stanley Cup as GM in 1999. He first joined the Stars as head coach of the Minnesota North Stars in 1990 and became GM in 1992.

The move reunites Gainey with Nieuwendyk, one of his biggest player acquisitions during his tenure in Dallas. He acquired Nieuwendyk from Calgary in a trade that saw Jarome Iginla go to the Flames. Nieuwendyk captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1999 in the Stars' Stanley Cup win.

"I'm extremely pleased that we are adding a respected hockey man the caliber of Bob Gainey as a senior advisor to our staff," said Nieuwendyk. "His experience and wisdom in this business is second-to-none, and he'll be an incredible asset as we continue to build our team to championship levels."
