NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA general counsel Steve Fehr resumed labour talks on Saturday, looking for common ground on issues in an effort to get back to more formal bargaining between both sides.

Both men met at an undisclosed location on Saturday afternoon and held discussions until 1am et on Saturday night.

"We had a series of meetings yesterday (Saturday) and exchanged views on the most important issues separating us," wrote Daly in an email to TSN on Sunday morning."We plan to meet again sometime early this week.''

Fehr sent out a release later Sunday morning saying that he agreed with how Daly summed up the session.

"Hopefully we can continue the dialogue, expand the group, and make steady progress," said Fehr.

The NHLPA's negotiating committee held a conference call on Sunday afternoon with the discussion focused on the present state of negotiations. The committee, along with the executive board, will hold a second conference call on Monday at 4pm et.

The lockout reached its 50th day on Sunday. There have already been 327 games cancelled - including the New Year's Day Winter Classic that was wiped out Friday - and the NHL has said it will be impossible to play a full season.
