Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur was on hand at the Bell Centre to present three young hockey players with the Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence and Merit.

The Awards of Excellence are handed out to players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS), the Merit Award is given to a player from Quebec Junior AAA (QJAAAL). All three awards are based on the players' excellence in hockey and academics.

Past winners include Guy Boucher in 1993 and Mathieu Darche in 1999, both earned the award while playing for the McGill Redmen.

Patrick Delisle-Houde kept the McGill University winning tradition alive as he was this year's recipient of the Excellence Award at the CIS level. This is the third straight year a McGill hockey player has won the award.

Delisle-Houde,a forward, just completed his rookie year with the Redmen, he finished the season with six goals and 18 assists in 26 games. He's working towards a degree in Physical Education and currently has a grade-point average of 3.52 which is equivalent to 88 percent.

Drummondville Voltigeurs defenseman Charles-David Beaudoin didn't let playing in the QMJHL affect his Cegep education, he finished his Social Science diploma at Cegep Drummondville in two years with a 80 percent. Beaudoin is a stay-at-home defenseman with great leadership skills. This year he picked up two goals, 12 assists and 107 penalty minutes in 68 game. Not only do Delisle-Houde and Beaudoin get the honor of meeting Guy Lafleur they're also presented with a $6,000 scholarship.

The Merit Award along with a $1,000 scholarship was given to Alexis Guilbault who is a skilled centreman with Les Lauréats du Cegep Saint-Hyacinthe. With a 50 point season he was voted the league's top rookie. He's working on finishing his Social Science dipolma and is very involved in the Saint-Hyacinthe community. Guilbault helps young hockey players improve their technical hockey skills as well as volunteers with Quebec Breakfast Club.

The Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence and Merit was first introduced in 1985 with the objective is to encourage hockey players to not only excel on the ice but in the classroom as well.
