The 2013 NHL season started off a little rocky for P.K. Subban who missed training camp and the first six games of the regular season due to ongoing contract negotiations. Subban wanted to sign a long-term deal with the Canadiens, however Habs GM Marc Bergevin was interested in signing him to a two-year contract.

Eventually both sides settled on a deal worth $5.75 million over two years. The 24-year-old defenceman went on to have his best NHL season so far, picking up 11 goals and 27 assists in 42 regular season games.

Prior to Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final the NHL announced that Subban is this year's winner of the James Norris Memorial Trophy which is given out to the defenceman that demonstrates the greatest all-around ability. The last Canadiens player to win the Norris was Chris Chelios in 1989, the same year Subban was born.

Subban wasn't the only one from the Habs organization that was a finalist for an NHL award. Brendan Gallagher was a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the league's top rookie but it was Florida Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau who took home the hardware. Marc Bergevin was nominated for General Manager of the Year but lost out to Ray Shero of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
