The Washington Nationals are the latest team to claim top spot in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, replacing the San Francisco Giants, and sitting ahead of the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox.

Among the teams moving up this week, the Los Angeles Dodgers rise from 14 to seven, getting healthier in the lineup and riding positive results from starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy. The Oakland A's rise from 27 to 22.

Going the other way, the Giants dropped from one to five after a rough start to the second half, and the Baltimore Orioles slipped from six to 13 after getting bounced from the top of the AL East. The Detroit Tigers drop from 12 to 17.

The Toronto Blue Jays continue to rank among contenders, up one spot from seven to six. They're close enough to make a strong push forward.

Adding LHP Drew Pomeranz was a worthwhile risk for the Red Sox, even if his first start results (5 ER in 3 IP) were less than ideal, and if he adds stability to the rotation, the Red Sox are going to be tough to beat down the stretch.

11 wins in the past 14 games has the Blue Jays within a game of the Red Sox for the lead in the American League East. With the return of RF Jose Bautista around the corner, Toronto's ready for a playoff push, but that probably requires a bullpen upgrade.

The Dodgers have been getting good starts out of RHP Brandon McCarthy (2-0, 1.69 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 22 K, 16 IP in 3 starts), but if Clayton Kershaw's back injury is going to keep him out long-term, this is going to be a major uphill fight.

Getting Yu Darvish back from the DL helps, but now the Rangers are missing a couple of regulars in the lineup. The plus side of a Prince Fielder injury, however, is that it could provide more consistent playing time for Jurickson Profar, who is hitting .304 with a .786 OPS in a part-time role.

Just when it looked like the Yankees might be on the verge of selling, they put together four straight wins, which gets them within five games of a wildcard spot. Yes, they should still sell, but if they're within striking distance, it will be tough for the Pinstripers to bite that bullet.

It's not easy to invest as much as the Diamondbacks did to acquire starting pitchers Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller in the offseason, but it didn't provide the expected improvement.
