Washington, DC  - Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of a wrist injury.

Werth hasn't played since last Friday when he was hurt in a game against San Diego. An MRI exam on Monday revealed a contusion.

The veteran slugger, who turns 36 years old on Wednesday, began this season on the DL recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He is batting just .208 with two homers and 12 runs batted in over 27 games this season.

To fill the vacancy, the Nationals recalled infielder Wilmer Difo from their Double-A affiliate in Harrisburg. The 23-year-old was last year's South Atlantic League MVP after hitting .315 at Single-A Hagerstown and opened eyes in spring training this year by hitting .318 in 13 games.
