TORONTO - The Toronto Raptors have hired Gord Herbert, adding another Canadian to their coaching staff.

Herbert, a former national team player who has been coaching in Europe for more than a decade, will work with player development.

Herbert joins Raptors assistant Jay Triano, who became the first Canadian-born coach in the NBA when he was hired by Toronto in 2003.

The 49-year-old Herbert has been coaching professionally since 1994, and led three of his teams to a spot in the Euroleague. He spent last season in Greece, leading Aris to a third-place finish in league play and a berth in the Euroleague's top-16.

He also coached three seasons in France with Paris Basket Racing (2004-'06) and Pau Orthez (2006-'07), guiding Pau Orthez to the French Cup championship and a top-16 finish in Euroleague action. He did coaching stints in Finland and Germany prior to that.

Herbert was an assistant to Triano with Canada's men's team at the 2002 world championships, and has also coached the Finnish junior and Georgian national teams.

The Penticton, B.C., native played for Canada's senior squad from 1982 to '87, and teamed up with Triano to win gold at the 1983 World Student Games in Edmonton.
