PHOENIX -- Victoria's Steve Nash earned his spot in the record books on Saturday.

The Phoenix Suns' point guard surpassed Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson for fifth on the NBA's career assists list.

Nash needed only five assists to pass Robertson's career total of 9,887 heading into Saturday's 118-107 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Nash had nine assists in the first quarter alone.

The 38-year-old Canadian tied Robertson's record with a lob to centre Marcin Gortat. He then assisted on a three-pointer by Channing Frye to surpass the NBA great.

By the end of the game, Nash had dished out 13 to take his career total up to 9,897.

Nash still trails John Stockton (15,806), Jason Kidd (11,842), Mark Jackson (10,334) and Earvin (Magic) Johnson (10,141) on the all-time list.

Kidd is still playing with the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.

The loss put Phoenix a game behind the Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Suns will play at Utah on Tuesday and Phoenix holds the tiebreaker over the Jazz.

The Suns lost Frye to a shoulder injury in the second quarter.
