Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade will have surgery on his left knee, keeping him from playing in the London Olympics.

A spokesman for USA Basketball confirmed Wade would not play next month and was expected to issue a statement shortly.

Wade, fresh off winning his second NBA title with the Heat, told the Associated Press he took the advice of doctors and decided to have the surgery on the knee that bothered him throughout the playoffs.

He was told by doctors that it would be a "cleanup" procedure and expects to be ready to play when the Heat start training camp in the fall.

Spokesman Craig Miller confirmed that Wade spoke with USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski to tell them he wouldn't be able to play.

Wade won a gold medal in Beijing four years ago and was also on the U.S. team that stumbled to bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
