Need to Know

The Tampa Bay Lightning hope to receive clarity on whether or not Steven Stamkos will remain with the team by this weekend.

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman told the Tampa Bay Times the team remains focused on signing Stamkos, not trading his rights, but need to know his decision in order to move forward.

"At some point on other players, I have to make decisions, whether it'd be restricted free agents, or potential trades or qualifying offers and things like that," Yzerman told the times. "I've got to make decisions and they can't be put off forever."

The 26-year-old centre scored 36 goals and 64 points in 77 games during the regular season last season, while also playing on the wing at times.

Stamkos’ regular season was cut short by blood clot in his right arm, which also forced him to miss all but one of Lightning’s 17 playoff games. He had two shots and was minus-1 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning lost the game 2-1.

Dreger: Habs will be looking to move up

Darren Dreger joins The Morning Show to discuss what the Habs should do ahead of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Doctors have pegged Stamkos’ chances of having another blood clot at five per cent.

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger told TSN Radio 690 on Tuesday that  reports out of Buffalo have the Sabres willing to spend as much as $12 million annually for Stamkos.

Something to Talk About

The Ottawa Senators are engaged in contract talks with defenceman Cody Ceci,  according to Dreger, though he adds the sides are not close.

Ceci, 22, is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1. He posted a career-high 10 goals and 26 points last season while playing 75 games. He was also plus-9.

The Senators selected Ceci 15th overall in the 2012 draft.

Shut It Down

Rumours emerged out of Chicago this week that the Blackhawks were interested in trading for Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin. Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford has ended that speculation on.

Speaking to Jenn Menendez the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Rutherford said the team is not looking to move the Russian forward, nor have they received an offer for him.

“None. We’re not looking to move him. I did not get an inquiry from any team,” Rutherford said.

As Menendez notes, Malkin has a no trade clause in his contract which runs through the 2020-21 season. His cap hit sits at $9.5 million.

Malkin is also dealing with an elbow injury which could require surgery this offseason.

Waiting by the Phone

The Dallas Stars dealt the negotiations rights of Alex Goligoski last week in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. The Vancouver Canucks are hoping to find a similar deal for pending free agent Dan Hamuis, however, one has yet to pop up.

“We would do something like that, but we haven’t had any calls,” Canucks general manager Jim Benning told the Vancouver Sun Monday. “And that whole situation with Dan I would say is still fluid. We’re going to see at the draft when we’re talking to other teams if there are players who make us better and then we can circle back with Dan and try to get something figured out. There’s nothing that has changed on that, we’re still trying to figure it out.”

The Canucks tried to move Hamhuis at the trade deadline but couldn’t find a suitable return. Now, it appears likely they’ll lose the 33-year-old for something if a deal cannot be made in the coming days.
