NFL fifth-year option tracker
NFL teams have until May 2 to either pick up or decline the fifth-year option for each player selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft for the 2017 season. Those who do not have their option exercised by May 2 will be eligible to become unrestricted free agents after the 2016 season.
The first round of the 2013 NFL Draft has been one of the most disappointing classes of the past of the past five years.
Of the 32 players selected, only nine have made at least one Pro Bowl in their first three seasons, while many have failed to secure consistent starting spots with their respective teams. Two of the players in the class (Dion Jordan and Jonathan Cooper) have been traded, while the Indianapolis Colts released their first-round pick, Bjoern Werner, earlier this offseason.
Teams had until May 2, 2016 to announce whether or not they would exercise the fifth-year option on the contracts on players selected in the opening round.
Eighteen of the 29 eligible players had their options picked up. Four of the top 10 selections in the 2013 draft had their options declined.
Three players in the class were ineligible to receive their option. Dion Jordan, who sat out the 2015 season due to suspension, could not have his option picked up because, once reinstated, his contract will resume under the third year of his rookie deal. Werner, of course, was also ineligible since he was released from his rookie deal. Philadelphia Eagles tackle Lane Johnson was also ineligible as the lone player in the first round to have received an extension.
The cost of the fifth-year option is determined by draft position and the player’s position. For players selected in the top 10 of the draft, their option cost is the average of the top 10 highest-paid players at their position. For the latter 22 picks, their option cost is determined by the average of the third through 25th-highest paid players at their position. Those who do not have their option exercised by May 2 will be eligible to become unrestricted free agents after the 2016 season.
