Rivers, Revis, Cribbs capture AFC monthly honors

New York, NY (Sports Network) - San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and Cleveland Browns wide- receiver/kick returner Joshua Cribbs have been selected as the AFC's top players for the months of December and January.

Rivers completed 67.9 percent (93-of-137) of his passes for 1,316 yards and nine touchdowns to help San Diego post a 5-0 record in the month to capture the AFC West crown and the second best record in the AFC. His 111.5 passer rating in December was the best in the league.

Thanks to his play, the Chargers have now won 18 straight games in December, tying Miami for the best monthly streak in the NFL as the Dolphins won 18 consecutive games in November from 1970-74. In his sixth season out of North Carolina State, Rivers has won two monthly awards as he also took home the honor for December 2008.

Revis had two interceptions, 18 tackles and 13 passes defensed as the Jets went 4-1 in the month and clinched an AFC Wild Card spot. He was part of a Jets defense that limited teams to 8.2 points and 182.8 yards per game in December, all tops in the NFL.

Overall, the Jets ranked first in the league in points allowed per games (14.8), yards allowed per game (252.3) and passing yards allowed per games (153.7). In his third year out of Pitt, it is his first monthly award. The Jets play in Cincinnati on Saturday.

Cribbs had two kickoff returns for touchdowns and totaled an AFC-best 527 kickoff return yards in December as Cleveland went 4-1 in December. In a 13-6 win over the Steelers on December 10, he totaled 200 yards (61 punt returns, 43 kick returns, 87 rushing and nine receiving) and on December 20 in a 41-34 win against Kansas City, he had kickoff touchdown returns of 103 and 100 yards. He now has eight kickoff returns for touchdowns in his career, the most in NFL history. In his fifth season out of Kent State, it is his third monthly award as he also won in September and November of 2007.
