TSN.ca NFL Editor Justin Boone runs down the top waiver wire pickups with a focus on the coming week and rest of the season.

QUARTERBACKS

Christian Ponder (at Redskins)
Ponder may have thrown his first two interceptions of the season on Sunday, but he also put up 258 passing yards and two touchdowns while adding an extra 31 yards on the ground. Ponder has developed into a reliable bye week starter and gets a gift this week in the Redskins' secondary. Among starting quarterbacks, Ponder (69.0) trails only Robert Griffin III (69.1) in completion percentage on the year. With the Vikings' offence emerging as a potent unit, Ponder should be owned in all leagues.

Kevin Kolb (vs. Bills)
Over the last two weeks the Bills' defence has 643 yards through the air and six passing touchdowns. Yikes. After their loss to the 49ers, Buffalo will stay out West, and spend the week in Arizona, preparing for the Cardinals. Kolb has averaged 306.5 passing yards in his last two games and is getting the ball to receivers other than just Larry Fitzgerald. With Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams both on IR, the Cardinals will take advantage of the Bills' weak pass defence and Kolb will reap the benefits.

Others to consider - Josh Freeman (vs. Chiefs), Brandon Weeden (vs. Bengals), Alex Smith (vs. Giants)

RUNNING BACKS

Jahvid Best (at Eagles)
Best will undergo several tests this week to see if he can finally come back from concussion. The Lions can activate Best off the PUP list and he could return for Week 7. Without knowing whether he will gain medical clearance, Best would simply be a flier in deep leagues, but he has shown glimpses of rare ability when he has been on the field.

David Wilson (at 49ers)
Ahmad Bradshaw is leading the way in the Giants' backfield again, but Andre Brown suffered a concussion last week. That means the door is open again for Wilson, who started the year in Tom Coughlin's dog house. This week's matchup is one to avoid, but Bradshaw has had trouble staying healthy and Wilson is a first rounder that has the talent to excel is given the opportunity.

Alex Green/James Starks (at Texans)
The waiver wire options at running back get worse and worse as the season goes on. With Cedric Benson being likely lost for the season, the Packers will have to turn to Green or Starks to carry the load. Green is a more dynamic talent, but Starks has started for the Packers before. Neither player is a great play this week against the Texans. Riding with the Packers' backfield is a risky proposition the rest of the way.

Others to consider - Kendall Hunter (vs. Giants), Larod Stephens-Howling/William Powell (vs. Bills), Bilal Powell (vs. Colts), Daniel Thomas/Lamar Miller (vs. Rams), Ronnie Hillman (at Chargers)

WIDE RECEIVERS

Darrius Heyward-Bey (vs. Falcons)
After being carted off the field in Week 3, it didn't seem like DHB had a chance to return to action so quickly. However, the Raiders' wideout has been cleared for contact and all signs point to him being back at practice this week. Heyward-Bey immediately steps back into the starting lineup and with players like Marques Colston, Brandon Marshall and Steve Smith all on bye, DHB may be your best hope.

Josh Gordon (vs. Bengals)
When you don't draft well, you end up desperately searching the waiver wire for longshots. That's mostly what this week's receiver group is made of. Gordon may have only caught two passes in Week 5, but he made them count. Gordon racked up 82 yards and two scores against the Giants, as he started in place of an injured Mohamed Massaquoi. Gordon was selected in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft, so the Browns are hoping that he can justify the pick (which will cost them a second rounder in next year's draft).

Others to consider - Kendall Wright (vs. Steelers), Brandon Gibson/Chris Givens (at Dolphins), Golden Tate (vs. Patriots)

TIGHT ENDS

Heath Miller (at Titans)
True to form, the Titans gave up yet another touchdown to a tight end in Week 6. Miller has been used more in the passing game this season and that will surely continue on Thursday night when the Steelers try to exploit one of the Titans' biggest weaknesses. Miller has been a big target for Ben Roethlisberger in the red zone, scoring four touchdowns in four games.

Coby Fleener/Dwayne Allen (at at Jets)
The Colts are throwing a tonne this season and the tight ends have been consistently involved. Fleener hauled in five passes for 41 yards in Week 5, while Allen had four catches for 38 yards and a touchdown. Fleener will remain more of a threat between the 20-yard lines, leaving Allen to do his best work near the goal line. Both players can be solid fill-ins to cover byes.

Others to consider - Brandon Myers (vs. Falcons), Zach Miller (vs. Patriots), Rob Housler (vs. Bills)
