CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A person familiar with the situation says Carolina has acquired safety Colin Jones from the San Francisco 49ers, a move the Panthers hope will upgrade their special teams coverage units.

The Panthers gave up a future undisclosed draft pick to the 49ers, the person told The Associated Press Friday on condition of anonymity because the move has not yet been announced by the teams.

The 6-foot, 208-pound Jones could help Carolina's shaky coverage team that allowed three touchdowns on punt returns last season and a TD in the preseason on a kickoff return. Entering his second season, Jones played in 13 games last year for the 49ers seeing, mostly on special teams. He had six tackles on defence.
