FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have re-signed veteran linebacker Bobby Carpenter.

The move was one of four made by the team on Wednesday when it released defensive lineman Terrell McClain, added tight end Alex Silvestro to the practice squad and released offensive lineman Thomas Austin from the practice squad.

The Patriots had released Carpenter on the final cut of training camp on Sept. 1 after signing him as a free agent following two seasons with the Detroit Lions. He entered the NFL as the 18th pick in the 2006 draft by the Dallas Cowboys, spending four years with them. He started the 20120 season with the Miami Dolphins before moving to Detroit.

Carpenter has started 10 of his 89 pro games.
