CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Montreal Alouettes' first-round pick of the CFL draft is going to start his football career south of the border.

Former Montreal Carabins offensive tackle David Foucault has signed a contract with the NFL's Carolina Panthers after impressing at the team's rookie minicamp. The Panthers officially announced the signing on Twitter on Monday.

Foucault was drafted fifth overall by the Alouettes last Tuesday, but the towering six-foot-seven, 320-pound offensive lineman has drawn considerable interest in the United States due to his size and athleticism.

Foucault, who was undrafted at the NFL draft earlier this month, is the second player from the Quebec university system to agree with an NFL team this off-season.

Offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif agreed to a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs after being selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft.
