Across Canada

Vancouver Canucks

Mikael Samuelsson skated with the Twins on Sunday. Alain Vigneault says he will try a number of players with them during camp, but ultimately it will likely come down to Sammuelson or Alex Burrows. Cody Hodgson skated with the 'C' group. He is still not recovered from a back injury and not able to take contact. Until he can, he won't practice with the regulars. Sergei Shirokov was impressive among the early group. The only regulars playing in the game in Terrace on Monday are Willie Mitchell and Kevin Bieksa. Cory Schneider and Andrew Raycroft will share goaltending duties. - TSN

Calgary Flames

Sunday's skate saw some notable combos from the first two groups - Team A: Backlund-Jokinen-Iginla, Regehr and Bouwmeester (Brian McGrattan in non contact yellow - shoulder; Team B: Dawes-Langkow-Van der Gulik, Greentree-Fleury-Germyn, Pardy-Phaneuf (Rene Bourque in non contact yellow - ankle). The team did 30 minutes of passing, skating and rushing drills followed by 15 minutes of defensive systems work. It was very detailed, with players working on positioning when the puck is in different areas of the zone. They then did 15 minutes of drills with the forwards and defencemen split. It didn't matter who made a mistake, Sutter stopped the drill to make sure it was done right. The fans are pulling for Theo Fleury, who made a nice set up on a 3-on-2 and the fans in the second deck applauded. Miikka Kiprusoff said if he's healthy and they want him, he will play for Finland in the Olympics. - TSN

Mitchell. Coach Ron Wilson says he intends to put Schenn with Beauchemin and Komisarek and Kaberle together. Wilson added that Stempniak was the most improved player from last year so far. He also said that Allison will have to battle to get a contract - and the game has changed. Jonas Gustavsson was taken to hospital for a check-up after feeling dizzy during a stationary bike test on Saturday. Wilson said Gustavsson is fine after the testing. - TSN

Edmonton Oilers

Some notable combos from Day 1: O'Sullivan-Horcoff-Hemsky, Penner-Gagner-Eberle, Moreau-Cogliano-Pisani, Jacques-Pouliot-Stortini. Gilbert Brule left the skate early on, apparently with a flu bug. They'll break into two groups for Monday's skate. - TSN
