2011 NHL on TSN Mock Draft

TSN's Pierre McGuire and former NHL general manager Craig Button predict who they think would be the best fit for each NHL team picking in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

First Round

PICK NHL TEAM PLAYER POSITION 10-11 TEAM
1 EDM ADAM LARSSON D SKELLEFTEA (SWEDEN)
TSN Analysis: You look at the Oilers' organizational depth on defence, it's not very good right now. Larsson can dominate with the puck, play physically, has great composure and can take charge of a game. - Pierre McGuire
2 COL RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS C RED DEER (WHL)
TSN Analysis: Colorado would be tickled pink for Nugent-Hopkins to be available at number two. A terrific playmaker, he's got that uncanny ability to see things that very few can see. - Craig Button
3 FLA GABRIEL LANDESKOG LW KITCHENER (OHL)
TSN Analysis: Landeskog's ready to play in the NHL right now. He's a physical, tough player. This is a guy that wants to make a difference in the game not just with his skill, but with his will. - Pierre McGuire
4 NJ JONATHAN HUBERDEAU C/LW SAINT JOHN (QMJHL)
TSN Analysis: Huberdeau's a great two-way forward. Regardless of the situation in the game, regardless of the challenges he may be faced with, he finds a way to impact it. - Craig Button
5 NYI RYAN STROME C NIAGARA (OHL)
TSN Analysis: Strome is a great offensive player. You need someone to compliment John Tavares. He could be a great centre for Tavares and really make a difference on the Islanders. - Pierre McGuire
6 OTT SEAN COUTURIER C DRUMMONDVILLE (QMJHL)
TSN Analysis: If you look at a one-two punch up the middle with Couturier and Jason Spezza, the Senators set themselves up nicely in their forward group. - Craig Button
7 WPG DOUGIE HAMILTON D NIAGARA (OHL)
TSN Analysis: They need some size on defence. They need to stabilize things in their own zone and Hamilton's a physical presence. He's A real tower of power. - Pierre McGuire
8 CLB RYAN MURPHY D KITCHENER (OHL)
TSN Analysis: Murphy may be the most prolific offensive defenceman in the draft. Murphy reminds me of Sergei Zubov. He can make things happen seemingly out of nothing. - Craig Button
9 BOS (via TOR) JONAS BRODIN D FARJESTADS (SWEDEN)
TSN Analysis: Boston probably wanted Murphy, but they're not getting him here. Brodin would be a very useful player for Boston's blue line. - Pierre McGuire
10 MIN SVEN BARTSCHI LW PORTLAND (WHL)
TSN Analysis: Baertschi is a very skilled and a very competitive player. He's exactly the kind of player the Wild could use. - Craig Button
11 COL (via STL) MIKA ZIBANEJAD C DJURGARDENS (SWEDEN)
TSN Analysis: You can never have enough depth down the middle. Zibanejad is a tremendous talent and a human highlight reel when it comes to manufacturing offence. - Pierre McGuire
12 CAR NATHAN BEAULIEU D SAINT JOHN (QMJHL)
TSN Analysis: Jim Rutherford doesn't like taking defencemen, but the slick-skating Beaulieu is too good to pass up. - Craig Button
13 CGY ZACK PHILLIPS C SAINT JOHN (QMJHL)
TSN Analysis: For years they've been dying for a centre in Calgary. Phillips is a great playmaking centre, he can elevate his game at key times and did so in the Memorial Cup final. - Pierre McGuire
14 DAL MARK SCHEIFELE C BARRIE (OHL)
TSN Analysis: A great skating, two-way centreman. Sceifele can create offence, he can play all areas of the game. He's a top player.- Craig Button
15 NYR MARK McNEILL C PRINCE ALBERT (OHL)
TSN Analysis: McNeill is one of those players that can do a lot of great things offensively. But if you look at his 57 point increase this year, you're looking at a heck of a player. - Pierre McGuire
16 BUF JAMIE OLEKSIAK D NORTHEASTERN (HE)
TSN Analysis: Oleksiak is a big raw defenceman who has a tremendous amount of potential. Imagine him pairing up with Tyler Myers.- Craig Button
17 MTL BRANDON SAAD LW SAGINAW (OHL)
TSN Analysis: Saad is a good, two-way player. He's fallen down the rankings a bit, but he'd be a great fit for the Canadiens. They need to add some physical players. - Pierre McGuire
18 CHI OSCAR KLEFBOM D FARJESTAD (SWE)
TSN Analysis: Klefbom's a big, strong defenceman that fits in nicely with Chicago's blue line. - Craig Button
19 EDM (via LAK) JOE MORROW D PORTLAND (WHL)
TSN Analysis: He's one of the best-skating defencemen in this draft. He's got fantastic offensive talent and he can also defend. He's really well-rounded. - Pierre McGuire
20 PHO MATT PUEMPEL LW PETERBOROUGH (OHL)
TSN Analysis: Puempel is a really strong winger and a gifted scorer. Jeff Twohey, who drafted him in Peterborough, is now working in Phoenix. - Craig Button
21 OTT (via NAS) TY RATTIE RW PORTLAND (WHL)
TSN Analysis: They need offence in Ottawa and Rattie is a guy who has played in a pro-style offence in Portland. But he also knows how to deal with pressure. He finishes plays off. - Pierre McGuire
22 ANA JOEL ARMIA RW ASSAT (FINLAND)
TSN Analysis: Armia's a big, lanky winger that fits in nicely with the size on the Anaheim Ducks' forward ranks. - Craig Button
23 PIT TYLER BIGGS RW US NTDP
TSN Analysis: Biggs is probably the nastiest guy in this draft. He's a big physical player that's going to punish people once he gets to the NHL level. - Pierre McGuire
24 DET CONNOR MURPHY D US NTDP
TSN Analysis: He's had some back problems, but he came back when it mattered most and scored the winning goal at the Under-18 championships.- Craig Button
25 TOR (via PHI) ROCCO GRIMALDI C US NTDP
TSN Analysis: Grimaldi is one of those guys Brian Burke would love. He plays with speed, tenacity, knows how to finish plays off and never backs down in a one-on-one situation. - Pierre McGuire
26 WSH RICKARD RAKELL RW PLYMOUTH (OHL)
TSN Analysis: Rakell's a really skilled player. Washington's had a lot of success with Swedish players. - Craig Button
27 TB DUNCAN SIEMENS D SASKATOON (WHL)
TSN Analysis: They need some bite on the back end in Tampa. Siemens would be a really good fit coming from Saskatoon. - Pierre McGuire
28 SJ NICKLAS JENSEN LW/RW OSHAWA (OHL)
TSN Analysis: I love this guy. He's a two-way player, he can play all three forward positions. Jensen has a lot of potential. - Craig Button
29 VAN DAVID MUSIL D VANCOUVER (WHL)
TSN Analysis: Musil's a home-grown guy. He's a little off the board, but he's going to be a good player. - Pierre McGuire
30 TOR (via BOS) STUART PERCY D MISSISSAUGA (OHL)
TSN Analysis: Percy continuously got better as the season progressed. He's a smart player who knows how to make the right plays in all different situations. - Craig Button
