Leading Cup favourite is a fast and skilled team with most improved goaltending and depth.

A

Anaheim Ducks

Best powerplay, with an excellent goaltending duo and offensive strength.

A

Boston Bruins

From the goaltending, to the defenCe, to the forwards, they are a complete team.

A

Montreal Canadiens

The 'Change Gang' has gone from 15th to first in East. Bravo GM Marc Bergevin!

A-

Pittsburgh Penguins

Penguins must prove defence won't be Achilles' heel - again. Penalty Killing has fallen to 22nd.

A-

Ottawa Senators

Stellar net-minding has offset impact of injuries to three stars. Lowest GAA & SV% in League.

B+

Carolina Hurricanes

The line of Staal, Tlusty & Semin is one of the league's best in scoring and +/-.

B+

Toronto Maple Leafs

Much-improved PK, save percentage and major contributions from newbies

B

Los Angeles Kings

Cup-form Kings capable of being first repeat winner since 1998. 10th in the league in goals for.

B

Minnesota Wild

Offence improved with addition of Parise but still near bottom of league.

B-

New York Rangers

Nash has shone on Broadway but more players will need to take leading roles.

B-

Dallas Stars

In one of the league's most competitive divisions, they remain competitive for a playoff spot.

B-

Winnipeg Jets

Improved their play away from the MTS Centre but have been far too hospitable at home.

C+

Vancouver Canucks

Goals for are down, goals against are up, PP is anaemic and PK is struggling.

C+

Detroit Red Wings

This could be the year they find themselves as spectators when the playoffs begin.

C+

Phoenix Coyotes

Groundhog Day in Phoenix. They just find a way to remain competitive.

C+

Colorado Avalanche

Duchene has rebounded from injuries and is establishing himself as the Avs' next star.

C+

New York Islanders

Tavares establishing himself as a star but the Isles need to lower goals against to contend.

C+

St. Louis Blues

Goaltending is not good enough to be considered a contender for the Stanley Cup.

C+

New Jersey Devils

PK is near the bottom of league. Brodeur's value to this team has not diminished.

C

Nashville Predators

They keep the puck out of both nets, their own and the other teams'!

C

Columbus Blue Jackets

Have highly competitive Blue Jackets turned a corner?

C-

San Jose Sharks

After beginning season with seven wins, they have four in last 17 games.

D+

Calgary Flames

To compete for playoffs Kiprusoff will have to be their MVP

D+

Philadelphia Flyers

Like the Liberty Bell, there are cracks. They can't sustain good play for extended periods.

D+

Edmonton Oilers

Highly-touted Oilers have worse record than at same time in 2011-12.

D+

Washington Capitals

They were once an electrifying team with an electrifying player. The lustre is off

D+

Tampa Bay Lightning

Second best in goals for; fifth-worst in goals against. Numbers don't add up.

D

Buffalo Sabres

Erratic team changed their coach and like struggling teams do, they find a way to lose.

D

Florida Panthers

Decimated by injuries and the net effect is that there will be no return to the playoffs.
