Alexander Ovechkin is the winner of the 2008 Hart Trophy as the National Hockey League's most valuable player to his team.

That is, according to the NHL's online shop for a few hours on Friday.

The league's official website briefly displayed a blue Reebok Washington Capitals T-Shirt of the Russian superstar, with the title ‘2007-08 Hart Trophy winner' splashed across the bottom.

“The Hart Memorial Trophy, originally known as the Hart Trophy, the “oldest and most prestigious individual award in hockey,” is awarded annually to the Most Valuable Player in the National Hockey League,” the sales page read.

Ovechkin was the league-leader in points and goals with 112 points and 65 goals respectively. The 22-year-old helped lead the Capitals to the Southeast Division title and a spot in the playoffs. The Russian sniper set the single-season NHL record for goals by a left wing and scored the most goals in a season since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96.

Frank Brown, spokesman for the NHL released this statement concerning the T-shirt advertisement:

"In an effort to offer our fans the merchandise they want in a timely manner following an event such as the NHL Awards, our licensees prepare product for all possible outcomes. In this situation, the link for one of the possible products became live early through an error by our e-commerce provider. We regret the error and have since taken steps to amend."
