The Washington Capitals have agreed to terms with restricted free agent defenceman Mike Green.

Sources tell TSN it's a four year deal with an average annual salary of $5.25 million.

"Mike has developed into an impact defenceman in the short time since we drafted him, and he will be a key part of our team moving forward," said Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee. "We look forward to his further contributions as we continue to improve the hockey club."

Green, a first round pick by the Capitals in 2004, had 18 goals and 56 points in 82 games last season. The 18 goals led all NHL defencemen, making Green the youngest player to accomplish that feat since Paul Coffey in 1981-82.

He was also +6 on the season, the first time he has been on the right side of the plus/minus ledger.

Green was third in playoff scoring on the team behind Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin. Green had three goals and four assists for seven points in seven post-season games.

Signing Green before he hit the restricted free agent market was important for the Capitals, as he may have attracted offer sheets from other clubs.
