The Los Angeles Kings have named Terry Murray as the club's new head coach.

Murray signed a multi-year contract to replace Marc Crawford, who was the bench boss for the past two seasons before being relieved of his duties on June 10. Murray becomes the 22nd head coach in Kings history.

''I am very excited about this opportunity,'' Murray said in a statement. ''This will be my biggest challenge as a coach. There is a lot of work ahead and it will take a collective effort to execute the plan we have in place. I am looking forward to training camp and to getting the process under way.''

Murray's reume includes head coaching duties with the Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers and the Philadelphia Flyers, where he led that club to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals,

''We are very pleased that Terry has accepted this challenge,'' Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi said. ''He has a wide range of coaching experience and he understands the importance of teaching, which is critical to the building process.''

Murray spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Flyers, an organization he has worked for as a head coach, assistant coach, pro scout and player. This past season he helped the Flyers record 95 points and advance to Eastern Conference Finals after earning 56 points in 2006-07.

Murray also played in 302 career NHL regular season games over eight seasons with Washington, Philadelphia (two stints), the Detroit Red Wings and the California Golden Seals/California Seals, who originally drafted Murray in the seventh-round (88th overall) of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft.
