Gillis and Sedins talk, but not about contracts

Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis and Daniel and Henrik Sedin finally met in person on Wednesday, though both sides did not have much discussion about the possibility of the twins playing in Vancouver beyond this season.

"We had a good dinner yesterday," Daniel told reporters on Thursday. "We got to talk to Mike and it was good. We had a chance to talk to him and we didn't talk too much about contract or anything."

Daniel and Henrik, who led the Canucks in scoring over the last two seasons, are in the final years of their respective contracts and will become unrestricted free agents next summer.

Gillis described his meeting with the twins as a get-to-know session.

"We didn't discuss it last night, and I'm not going to discuss it publicly with anyone," he said Thursday. "We want to keep quality players here, we want to have players that want to play here, and the strategy for any player is to try and accomplish those goals. You know, we've had a strategy in place for some time, and we're gonna follow through on it."

For now, the Sedins' focus will be getting ready for training camp and getting that playoff spot they missed out on last season.

"We talked to J.P. (Barry) and he knows what we want," said Daniel. "Mike knows what we want too and it's up them now. J.P.'s gonna call us when something is close to getting done. We're going to focus on the season, hopefully we can get a good start and get things going."

It will likely take six to $6.5 million to sign each player, and will be hard for Gillis to low-ball the pair, given the $10 million he he has on the table for Mats Sundin. But the siblings believe their negotiations will go in the right direction.

"We had good dialogue," added Daniel. "Mike is a nice man, we talked to him yesterday and we're optimistic."
