Video game simulation says Red Wings will repeat

The Stanley Cup is staying put in Hockeytown, according to a simulation of the 2008-09 season by Electronic Arts using its "NHL 09 video" game.

The simulation shows the Detroit Red Wings defeating the Montreal Canadiens four games to two in the Stanley Cup final, with Pavel Datysuk capturing the Conn Smythe Trophy.

The Red Wings won the President's Trophy for the second straight season, leading the league with 53 wins and 114 points. Pittsburgh was the power in the East, finishing with 51 wins and 112 points but was upset in the Eastern final in seven games by Montreal.

The Habs, in their centennial season, finished second in the East with 49 wins and 100 points. according to the simulation.

Penguins star Sidney Crosby, injury free during the season, won both the Hart Memorial and Art Ross trophies with 113 points. Washington sniper Alexander Ovechkin scored 56 goals to collect his second Maurice Richard Trophy while Calgary's Dion Phaneuf won the Norris Trophy winner as top defenceman, helping Flames (43 wins, 91 points) to third in the West.

The simulation had Phoenix's Kyle Turris as top rookie, winning the Calder with 24 goals and 43 assists.

The video game came up with a rough ride for Toronto, which finished 14th in the East with 34 wins and 78 points. The Senators (40 wins, 90 points) finished seventh in the East, losing to the Habs in seven games in the first round of the playoffs.

Edmonton (42 wins, 90 points) placed eighth in the West and was swept by Detroit in the first round of the playoffs. Vancouver (40 wins, 87 points) finished 10th in the West.
