The bad news continues to pour in for the Carolina Hurricanes as the team announced that defenceman Joni Pitkanen will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

The injury occurred during Saturday's victory over the New York Islanders, a game in which rookie forward Brandon Sutter was also injured.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Marty Isbell at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina later this week.  The Finnish blue liner is expected to miss between three and four weeks.

The 25-year old Pitkanen has a goal and three assists in seven games this season.  He was acquired by the Hurricanes in the off-season from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Erik Cole.
