In a state where Arnold Schwarzenegger is Governor, Eugene Melnyk is trying to find himself a new Senator.
According to the Ottawa Sun, the Ottawa Senators' owner met with Mats Sundin over lunch on Friday in Los Angeles to try and lure the NHL's most coveted remaining free agent to the nation's capital.
under the team's salary cap if he wanted to join the team.
"I just don't want to start commenting on every team and what takes place in every meeting," Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry, told Sun Media on Saturday. "Mats and Mr. Melnyk had a good chance to sit down during a meeting last month in Sweden. I'm quite certain that they had a nice visit (yesterday) and the Senators have been one of teams that has kept in regular contact since the summer."
Sundin, a former Sens-killer who is being pursued by as many as 10 teams, is not expected to decide on a team until mid-December and still hasn't made up his mind on whether or not he'll return to the NHL. He has been working out for the last month in the Los Angeles area, where he has been in talks with several NHL general managers.
Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey recently courted Sundin, while Canucks GM Mike Gillis and former Ducks general manager Brian Burke also met with the big Swede.
