Brendan Shanahan is pushing back his return to the Devils lineup.
The veteran forward announced after the team's morning skate that he will not play in Saturday's game against the Islanders, but will instead target Monday's game in Nashville as his date to debut for New Jersey.
The Mimico, Ont. native, who turns 40 next week, was signed on Thursday by the team with whom he started his career. Shanahan was drafted by the Devils in 1987 and played four seasons with the club until he signed as a free agent with St. Louis prior to the 1991-92 season.
Shanahan told the Newark Star-Ledger that he could have played in Saturday's game if necessary, but he has always looked to the Monday date for his first action. He said he wanted to make use of the extra practice before his first game against the Predators.
