And there are certainly plenty of names being bandied about with exactly one month to go.
The most coveted player appears to be Florida's Jay Bouwmeester. The star defenceman is the key to the Panthers' playoff chances, but if he chooses the open market over a contract extension before Mar. 4, the Panthers may be forced to sell him rather than lose him for nothing this summer.
Other blueliners that could be in play include Atlanta's Mathieu Schneider and Niclas Havelid, Tomas Kaberle and Pavel Kubina of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa's Filip Kuba, Pittsburgh Penguin Ryan Whitney and Brendan Witt of the New York Islanders.
Where forwards are concerned, the rumour mill has slowed down considerably for another star player in the state of Florida - Vincent Lecavalier. But depending on how the Lightning fare down the stretch and what long-term direction ownership wants to take, trading their best-ever player remains an option that will be considered.
While Lecavalier remains a long-shot to be dealt on Mar. 4, there are plenty of other options available at forward.
Ottawa forward Chris Neil balances a measure of skill and toughness many teams are seeking. Neil is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in July and the Senators may not have the cap space to re-sign him. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nik Antropov, also set to hit the open market, is another name getting attention.
Washington's Michael Nylander has two years remaining on his contract, but could be a tough sell at $4.8 million a season. Mark Recchi, Bill Guerin, Doug Weight and Keith Tkachuk are no strangers to being dealt on deadline day and they're back on the block again.
