With starting 'keeper Ryan Miller sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury, the Sabres picked up some goaltending insurance as they have acquired Mikael Tellqvist from the Phoenix Coyotes for a fourth round draft pick in 2010.
"We felt it was very important, given the schedule and the uncertainty of Ryan's situation, that we have an understanding of what is the best-case scenario and a worst-case scenario," Regier told the Canadian Press on Wednesday.
"We looked at four sets of three games in four nights coming up over the next month, and we wanted to make sure we had support for the club, and specifically Patrick Lalime."
The 29-year old Tellqvist has posted a 7-5-1 record with the Coyotes this season while serving as backup to Ilya Bryzgalov.
The Swedish netminder is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
