Brendan Shanahan will return to the New Jersey Devils for the 2009-10 season, as the free agent forward agreeed to terms on a one-year contract with the club on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old had six goals, eight assists and a minus-2 rating over his 34 games with New Jersey last season. He did not sign with the club until January.

Shanahan has played in 21 NHL seasons for five teams - New Jersey, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers. He captured three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings (1997, 1998 and 2002) and has 656 goals and 698 assists over his 1,524 career games.

He was originally drafted by Devils in the first Round (second overall) of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.
